Description
Volume VI of the How to Dance Through Time series reveals social interactions in the 19th century ballroom and demonstrates group dance formations and figures. Dancers parade around the room to view prospective dance partners-and to be viewed by others-in the Grand March. Next, the Lancers' Quadrille, a forerunner to the American square dance, exhibits a variety of the period's fluid, geometric patterns in five sections. Lastly, the coquettish Cotillon gives dancers many opportunities to pick and choose new partners in a series of complex, flirtatious dancing games that symbolized the democratization of late 19th century society.
