Description
On March 3, 1950, President Harry Truman seized control of mines affected by a nine-month coal strike. The United Mine Workers (UMW) had gone on strike the previous autumn, which created a national emergency - there was a severe shortage of coal for Americans to use to heat their homes over the winter. On March 5, John L. Lewis signed a new contract for the UMW, ending the strike.
