Description
During the 1964 presidential campaign, Republican candidate Barry Goldwater presented himself as the obvious choice for voters who opposed communism. Democrats, however, depicted him as a dangerous extremist whose conservative social policies would take the country a step backward: Goldwater, had, after all, voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Despite his aggressive campaigning, Goldwater only won six states: five in the Deep South, and his home state of Arizona.
