Description
Scope and content: An oral history interview with Nashville engineer Wilbur Foster Creighton, Jr., conducted 18 August 1976 by Ann Wells as part of the Historic Nashville, Inc. Tennessee Centennial Oral History Project. Creighton discusses the building of Nashville's Parthenon, both the original replica built for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition of 1897 and the second replica building during the 1920s, as well as his and his father's roles in the construction.

Biographical or Historical Data
Wilbur Foster Creighton, Jr. was born on 22 November 1906 in Nashville, Tenn., on Rutledge Hill to Julia Amelia Dudley and Wilbur Foster Creighton. He attended Ross Elementary School and Hume Fogg and graduated from Vanderbilt with a BE in Civil Engineering in 1929. After graduation, he joined the firm co-founded by his grandfather, Foster & Creighton Company, and later served as its president. Creighton was commissioned in the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1942-1946 during WWII, served in the Philippines, and was honorably discharged as a Major in 1946. Creighton joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1918, earned Eagle Scout Award in 1924, received the Silver Beaver Award from the Middle Tennessee Council of the Scouts of America in 1981, received National Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2003, and at the time of his death on 7 February 2004 was believed to have been the oldest living Eagle Scout in the US. Creighton served as president of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, was an Elder of Nashville's First Presbyterian Church, and was Master and Chaplain of the Corinthian Lodge 414 F&AM and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was married to the former Leanora Bates Allen (d. 1986) and father to Wilbur F. Creighton, III, and Penelope Creighton Dewell.
