Description
Scope and content: 79 color snapshots of scenes in Iraq and Kuwait, 2007 and 2008 taken during Mr. Smith's deployment overseas as part of a civil affairs battalion in the U.S. Army, attached to the 1st Cavalry Division and the 101st Airborne Division. The majority of images were taken by Mr. Smith in Ghazaliyah, Baghdad, Iraq. Images show U.S. soldiers interacting with Iraqi civilians, humanitarian efforts by the U.S. Army, representatives of local Iraqi neighborhood councils, U.S. Army vehicles and equipment, and street scenes showing soldiers, civilians, living conditions, buildings and similar subjects. Captions describing each image have been provided by Mr. Smith, and often provide more information and detail about circumstances or individuals than is readily apparent in the image alone
